Reading Revolution: Be Part of the Solution

literacy crisis

literacy crisis

literacy crisis

  • Less than half of students read at grade level
  • The pandemic has worsened an already dire situation
  • California had the second lowest literacy rate in the U.S in 2023, with 71.6% of adults having basic or below basic literacy skills
  • Disadvantaged students fared worse, with literacy rates as low as 30% post pandemic

Your donation can help reverse this trend. By supporting our mission to provide current, engaging books to underfunded libraries, you're investing in California's future. Together, we can improve literacy rates, enhance educational outcomes, and give every child the chance to succeed.

funding crisis

literacy crisis

  • California ranks near the bottom in public school library funding nationwide
  • A single new hardcover book can cost over $20, making library updates challenging
  • Since 2010, California eliminated state-level funding for school libraries
  • In 2013, the LCFF (Local Control Funding Formula) ended the state school and library improvement block grant
  • LCFF has led to increases in library funding for some districts but more than 50% have not received funding from general/LCFF

Your contribution helps bridge the literacy gap, ensuring more children have access to the resources they need to succeed academically and develop a lifelong love of reading.

Our mission

Our mission

Our mission is to provide children in underserved communities with access to new books that align with modern education standards and inspire a new generation of readers.

Through eye-catching presentations, our handmade displays offer an interactive approach to connecting children with literature and librarians.

We aim to cultivate a lifelong love of reading, develop critical thinking skills, and empower young minds through diverse, culturally relevant literature.

HOW IT WORKS

A Foundation of Critical Thinking and Lifelong Learning

Reading fuels our imagination, sparks creativity, and equips us with the skills to evaluate information critically - a vital asset in today's fast-paced digital world. Through reading, we cultivate critical thinking, expand our worldviews, and develop the ability to navigate our complex information landscape.

By fostering a love for reading, we're empowering the next generation to become lifelong learners, capable of making informed decisions and adapting to an ever-changing world. It's through reading that we build the foundation for a more thoughtful, informed, and connected society, opening doors to brighter futures and endless opportunities for growth.

By investing in school libraries and promoting reading, we're not just improving literacy rates—we're cultivating a generation of critical thinkers equipped to face the challenges of our information-rich world. Supporting this cause is an investment in a more informed, thoughtful, and capable society.
